V1: (I’m confused)

I’m a cigarette with ambition

I’m a lobster in the kitchen

I’m a pirate ship in a parking lot

All my plans are an afterthought

[INTERLUDE]

V2: (I’m kind of a mess)

I’m a french fry in a fish tank

I’m a lizard at the blood bank

I am both hands on the dashboard

I am smooth jazz on a washboard

CHORUS: (I’m the kind of person you might not notice)

There are submarines dreaming of a sunny day

And tambourines on airplanes

I’m a potted plants climbing up the window sill

I’m in motion even when I’m standing still

V3: (I often don’t feel valuable)

I’m an inchworm on tip toe

I’m a wooden spoon at a gun show

I’m a jelly fish on a crusade

I’m a dinosaur with a hearing aid

[INTERLUDE]

V4: (I’m not what you were expecting)

I’m an acorn rocket ship in quicksand

I am toothpaste in the palm of your hand

I’m a turtledove on leg day

I’m THE elephant in the hallway

[CHORUS]

V5: (but I am enough)

I don’t need permission

(I’m a marching band of pigeons)

(I’m your low key addiction)

I’m a wrong note with conviction

I’m that pirate ship in the parking lot

And I’m jumping in ready or not

[CHORUS]

Production Inspiration

Electric love - Resort

By six drummers

I like the deep panning to fit lots of different instruments, but kick and vocals are close and center. It feels cinematic (because it is). Vibraphone and strings take center in between vocal parts.

Don’t Think About the Polar Bear

By Bridget Kearney

Love the bass tone. Im also a sucker for super dead drum tone. Lots of panned percussion.

Living Room

By Andy Shauf

You already know how I feel about these drums! I love that you can tell this was recorded in a room. Close mics and room ambience. Vocals sit in the mix nicely.

Canta, Canta, Minha Gente

By Martinho Da Vila

Vocals are wonderfully surrounded at all times by different instruments and gang vocals. Feels like it was recorded in live in a unique space.

About her. again.

By Son Little

Dynamics in this one are great. Simple and deliberate parts and sounds. Very elegant and honest.

Sweet Wanomi

By Bill Withers

Drums are too far back in the mix, but I like the 70’s style production style. I mostly included this one because Bill is a role model.

Estábamos Tan Bien

By Daniella Spalla

Bass tone for miles. Same with guitars. Too much high end in the drums, high hat can be distracting.

The Descent

By Blue Wednesday

There is a whole world in here. Love the closeness of each instrument and restraint of the performance. Full sound spectrum from high end to low with little overlap between instruments.

Skate

By Silk Sonic

Modern take on that 70’s sound. Maybe a little too vocal forward for my taste ( I don’t sing as well as these gentlemen).

Roller Derby Queen

By Jim Croce

Drums and vocals. I also like the electric guitar/ piano playing with the space in between vocal lines.

Happiness/The Gondola Man

By Elliot Smith

More variation on “a unique room sound” mix. I like the panned double vocal sound, though I know it’s a way to hide behind self-conscious vocal takes (in the case of Elliot Smith). The vocals sit perfectly in this mix.

I’m Just a Country Boy

By Sam Cooke

The space in this mix is amazing. Obviously, lets the vocals soar, but also invites you into the world. Piano and background vocals gentle and add so much.

Eyes on the prize

By M. Ward

Probably my top musical inspiration overall. I love the wideness of this mix. Lots of restraint in instrumental parts and everything serves the lead vocals really well.

Wayside/Back in Time

By Gillian Welch

I always loved how forward the vocals are on this album. Let’s the listener hear every word.

Blind Curve

By J. E. Sunde

Simple, direct, clear, lots of space. This is a near perfect song and production. Drums, vocals, and everything else gently supports those two.
